Blake went to sleep last night with a spider....a real live, HUGE spider. We were reading books when something caught the corners of "our" eyes. We all turned at the same time to see the monstrosity skitter across the floor. Always a teacher, I jumped at the learning opportunity. We ran to grab the bug box, trapped the arachnid, and then had a talk about spiders, their habits, and other spider
stuff. Blake named his spider "Blake," then asked if he could take him to bed with him. I said fine---again, opting to enhance the experience. We tucked Blake in---tucked the spider in too. I kissed Blake's head, then had to kiss the bug box.
Later in the evening, I went to move the box and the spider to an outside place, when to my HORROR---the spider had escaped!! My sweet baby was in bed with a virtual tarantula.
Everything seems to be okay---no sign of the spider, nor damage to 3 year old skin. I guess the experience is important--Blake made friends with nature's most talented artist and mommy created new boundaries for her teaching moments.

If he was actually bit, he may have needed a catheter.
ReplyDeleteGood thing he has kneed pads with velcro....
ReplyDeleteBlake is so brave for wanting to sleep with a spider. Did it bother him that it was missing in the morning?
