I woke up this morning with a bit of sorrow in my heart. September 1st has always meant the end of summer, the beginning of fall. I love fall--sweaters, pumpkins, cool weather--but I really hate to see this summer go.
We have had a stellar season, full of bug bites, vacations, sunburns, family reunions, boat rides, chlorinated pools, sprinklers, bikes, and everything else that makes summer....summer.
Blake began June unable to ride a bike, hesitant about swimming, and afraid of the big twisty slide at the park. Today, he can ride a bike like a professional, fearlessly jump into the pool, and climb the slide--sometimes with only one hand. Maren has grown so much and can say, "boat," "pool," "bug," and "walk" like a big girl. She has a complete understanding of summer activities. Maren knows how to properly hold out her arms to be covered in sunscreen and can work the bug box to trap grasshoppers (it helps if they're already dead).
I often say things are All-American---I love this phrase. My kids have had an All-American summer. Free from fear, oppression, sorrow--free to worship, love one another, and delight in small and simple things. Not everyone lives this way---and it may not always be perfect for my little ones, but this summer...it's been perfect...truly All-American.

What a good post Annie. I always get a little sad at the end of summer...mostly because it means winter's on its way. (It's really not fair of me, because I do love the fall...I guess I just get a little worried because of my dread of winter.) What a fun summer you've had, it definitely sounds All-American to me:) Your little ones are so cute, they sound like they've grown up so much in the past couple of months!
ReplyDeleteI tried commenting on your blog a while ago, but I guess it didn't take. I'll try again. Your kids are getting so big! I'm glad to see you had such a fun summer. I suppose life in Billings can be enjoyable, too:)
